오늘 youtube에서 김광석의 이등병의 편지를 들었다.
영상은 1994년도에 방송국에서 국군위문을 간 것 처럼 보였다.
1994년... 내가 군생활하기 정확하게 10년전이다.
2004년 1월에 군대에 입대해 2006년 1월에 전역했다.
노래를 들으니 새삼 군생활에 대해 회상하게 되었다.
우리 나라는 분단 국가이다.
대한 민국의 국민으로 태어나서 국방의 의무를 다하는 것은 당연히 지켜야할 나의 의무라고 생각한다.
물론 내가 국방의 의무를 마치고 나서 이 글을 적기 때문에...
‘니가 군대를 갔다왔으니까 할 수 있는 쉬운 말이지!‘라 생각 될 것을 안다.
하지만 지금의 내가 당당하게 할 수 있는 말은 “그 2년 이란 시간이, 나에게 헛된 의미없는 시간이 아니였다.“라는 것이다. 또한 지금도 국가가 나를 부른다면 달려갈 자신감이 있다.
이런 국방의 의무는 줄곳 사회적 이슈가 되곤한다.
가장 빈번한 이슈는 병역비리가 아닌가 싶다.
군대를 갔다온 입장에서 혹은 군대를 가야하는 입장에서 병역비리를 저지를 사람들은 보면,
쌍욕부터 나오는게 사실이다.
하지만 병역비리를 보는 나의 시선은 조금 다르다.
오히려 병역비리를 저지른 사람이 불쌍하게 느껴진다.
“부모님과 떨어져 사는것이 그렇게 무서운 것인가?”,“다른 사람들과 어울리는 것이 그렇게 자신없나?”
그들은 오히려 자신들이 승자라고 착각하며 살아갈지 몰라도, 나는 그들에게 연민과 측은함을 느낀다.
2년동안 그들이 이룰수 있는 그 어떤 업적보다도 값어치 있는 것을 배워올 수 있는 좋은 기회를 놓친 불쌍한 청춘들...
